Birgunj, July 18: A group set fire to the Thakur Ram Multipurpose Campus in Adarsh Nagar, Birgunj on Saturday. Protesting against the shifting of the examination center, some students of the campus set fire to the campus on Friday.
They broke the door and entered the campus chief's office. The chairs, tables, sofas and other furniture there were taken out and vandalized and set on fire."We were in conversation with the students. We also informed them about the possible decision of Tribhuvan University that the examination center may go outside the campus," Assistant Campus Chief Dinesh Shah said, "There was a sudden incident of vandalism and arson yesterday. It is unfortunate.”The students have demanded that the examination center of Thakur Ram Multiple Campus should be in another campus of Birgunj even though it is not in the same campus.
The three-year BEd supplementary examination center of Thakur Ram Multiple Campus has been designated at Janjyoti Multiple Campus at Lalbandi, Sarlahi. Similarly, the four-year BEd exam has been scheduled at Ramraja Shah Multipurpose Campus in Kalaiya, Bara. For BBS students, Ramraja Shah Multipurpose Campus in Kalaiya and Hariketan Multiple Campus in Birgunj are assigned as the exam center. After the examination centers were assigned, the students ransacked and tried to set the campus on fire, expressing their anger.
Police Inspector Vishal Malla of Ward Police Office Virta said that the fire which was set on furniture was extinguished by calling the fire engine of Birgunj Metropolitan City. According to him, when the police arrived, the arsonists had already fled and some were shouting slogans against the exam center being shifted. A teacher of the campus said that it’s unfortunate that the students have caused damage to the educational institution as the examination centers are not determined by the campuses or the campus chiefs but by the National Examination Board of Tribhuvan University.
